What's sin

you choose-sin or righteousness
What is sin?
1 John 5:17 NIV All wrongdoing is sin
1 John 3:4 NIV Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness
Everyone sins
Psalm 51:5 NIV Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Romans 3:23 NIV for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
1 John 1:8 NIV If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
Sin separates us from God
Romans 8:8 NIV Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.
Isaiah 59:2 NIV But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.
John 9:31 NIV We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will.

God’s gift is life- Christ who calls sinners from sin

God allows us to sin
1. Because our hearts are hardened
Exodus 9:34 NIV When Pharaoh saw that the rain and hail and thunder had stopped, he sinned again: He and his officials hardened their hearts
Hebrews 3:13 NIV But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness
2. Because we don’t fear him
Exodus 20:20 NIV Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning."
3. We desire idols instead of God
Romans 1:24 NIV Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another
James 1 12-151 When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Sin controls the sinner
John 8:34 NIV Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
Romans 7:17 NIV As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.

Sin can effect our physical health
Psalm 38:3 NIV Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; my bones have no soundness because of my sin.
Psalm 38:18 NIV I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.
Psalm 40:12 NIV For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me.
Other people are effected by our sin and we will be punished
Leviticus 4:22 NIV " 'When a leader sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the commands of the LORD his God, he is guilty.
1 Kings 15:3 NIV He committed all the sins his father had done before him; his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been

Christ frees us from our enslavement to sin

You can overcome sin
1.By doing what is right
Genesis 4:7 NIV If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."
2. Fear God
Exodus 20:20 NIV Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning."
3. Prayer-
2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
4. Knowing God’s word
Psalm 119:133 NIV Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me
Psalm 119:11 NIV I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you
5. By not cherishing sin
Psalm 66:18 NIV If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;
Proverbs 23:17 NIV Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the LORD
6. Confessing sin
Proverbs 28:13 NIV He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
James 5:16 NIV Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective
7. Repent-quit sinning!
Luke 15:10 NIV In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
John 8:11 NIV "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
Acts 3:19 NIV Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,8. Forgive those who sin against you

9.warn others of sin
Ezekiel 3:19 NIV But if you do warn the wicked man and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his evil ways, he will die for his sin; but you will have saved yourself.Ezekiel 3:21 NIV But if you do warn the righteous man not to sin and he does not sin, he will surely live because he took warning, and you will have saved yourself
10. Be baptized
Acts 22:16 NIV And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.'
11. CONTROL ANGER
Ephesians 4:26 NIV "In your anger do not sin" [ Psalm 4:4] : Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry11. Come to God
James 4:8 NIV Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts,

We can be forgiven and still suffer consequences of our sin
Numbers 14:18 NIV The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.'
A good example of this is when David committed adultery, God forgave him but his first born child was killed as a result of his sin.
